Bahia Mar Projects

Bahia Mar, not just an hotel...

With an ethos of responsible tourism, Bahia Mar works to meet the many challenges of running a hotel in this fairly remote area of Mozambique, with its developing infrastructure. Most members of our team comes from Vilankulo. We invest in them through English classes, first aid and fire safety training, and wellbeing sessions, and we support community projects including the Bonguili pre-school, seahorse protection with the Mangalisse fishing community, and the ParCo beach clean team.
We buy from Vilankulo businesses wherever we can, and our fish comes directly from local fishing families.

Our waste is separated into glass, plastic, metal, paper and organic waste and collected by a specialist contractor for recycling and composting. Our gardens are planted mainly with indigenous coastal species. Guests are welcome to join in, and many do: every stay funds an indigenous tree, and some guests join our beach clean-ups.
Bahia Mar is proud to be the only hotel in Mozambique certified by Fair Trade Tourism (FTT). Since 2014, independent auditors have checked our operations against the FTT Standard, covering fair wages and working conditions, community benefit and environmental management.
